Rooted in tradition. Guided by intention.
At Fire in Ice, our process is grounded in the relationships we have established with our community as well as our clients. You will come to know everyone as we work directly at the gem mines of Sri Lanka, partnering with generational mining families in Ratnapura who have spent centuries perfecting their craft. Working face-to-face, we personally inspect sapphires and rare gems as they emerge from the earth—selecting each stone by hand for its natural beauty, integrity, and potential. And you will be with us every step of the way.
This is a deeply personal process. Stones are not pulled from catalogs or mass inventories; they are chosen in the moment, at the source, specifically with you in mind. This is a unique journey you will embark on with us, your team, in search of your stone, one that you will form a deep personal connection with as it makes its way to you.
Our approach supports responsible, small-scale mining practices that respect both people and environment while also protecting the integrity our ancient cultural traditions and making them relevant in the modern age while ensuring fair, transparent sourcing.
Each gem is ethically sourced, responsibly mined, and expertly cut to meet your vision— a stone that you and your team not only find together but shepherd through the entire process. Each step will be documented and memories will be created along the way.
Every stone has a story. Our role is to help you find the one that becomes yours.
Why Natural Matters
✔ Naturally Rare
Formed over millions of years — never manufactured, never replicated.

✔ Supports Real Communities
Each stone sustains generational mining families and centuries-old craftsmanship.
✔ Lower Environmental Impact
Small-scale hand mining allows land restoration and minimizes disruption.
✔ Authentic by Nature
Every stone is unique — a true product of the earth, not engineered uniformity.
✔ Built for Legacy
Chosen to be worn, treasured, and passed down.

Natural gemstones are not simply materials — they are the result of time, place, and human stewardship.
Formed over millions of years beneath the earth’s surface, each natural gem carries a story that cannot be replicated. In Sri Lanka, gem mining has been a respected craft for centuries, practiced by families who work the land carefully, patiently, and by hand. Knowledge is passed from generation to generation, and with it, a deep sense of responsibility to both the earth and the community.
In today’s market, lab-created gemstones are often positioned as the “ethical” alternative. While well-intentioned, this narrative overlooks an important truth: lab-grown stones are industrial products. They require significant energy, infrastructure, and resources to produce — and their rise has had unintended consequences for traditional mining communities whose livelihoods depend on natural gem production.
Choosing natural gemstones, when sourced responsibly, supports something fundamentally human. It sustains small-scale, low-impact mining practices. It preserves cultural heritage. It ensures that value flows back to the people whose skill, labor, and pride bring these stones to light.
At Fire & Ice, our commitment to natural gems is rooted in relationship and respect. By working directly at the source, we help protect a centuries-old tradition while offering our clients stones of genuine rarity, integrity, and meaning.
Natural matters because tradition matters.
Tradition, when honored, is one of the most ethical choices we can make.
Following the journey of your stone enables you to meet the people typically behind the scenes, understand the impact on the mining community, and appreciate the deep history you're supporting.
A Fire in Ice sapphire is both a lasting investment and a commitment to preserving generational craft.
Giving Back to the Communities We Source From
Fire in Ice believes that ethical sourcing goes beyond transparency — it includes responsibility to the people and land that make our work possible.
A percentage of all proceeds is reinvested directly into the local Sri Lankan communities where our sapphires are sourced. These contributions support meaningful, long-term needs, including education initiatives, orphanages, community safety, and essential infrastructure.
Beyond financial contributions, we prioritize personal gratitude and direct support. We thank the miners and families we work with through food donations and assistance provided to their homes, local churches, and schools — ensuring support reaches people in tangible, immediate ways.
Equally important is our commitment to the land itself. After mining activity concludes, we assist in restoring sites to their former agricultural use, most often rice paddies and other community-sustaining farmland. This ensures the land continues to provide for families long after a stone has been uncovered.
For us, ethical sourcing means leaving places stronger, safer, and whole — honoring both the craft and the communities behind every stone.
Every sapphire carries a responsibility — to the people who found it and the land it came from.
From the earth. Into your hands.
Rare stones, sourced at the origin and selected together.
Certified at the Source
Our Standard of Proof
Every gem we offer is independently certified and obtains a GIC
(Gemological Institute of Colombo) lab report confirming natural sapphire identity, measurements, and treatment disclosure. The GIC is the most respected certification in Sri Lanka, and the region.
Official export documentation is obtained through the National Gem & Jewelry Authority (NGJA), which ensures official identification, valuation, and compliance for export before your stone is securely packed for transport.
If further testing is desired, we offer access to several other independent laboratories at an additional cost.
This layered approach ensures every gem is authentic, ethically sourced, and fully traceable—from mine to hand to finger.
What truly sets us apart is transparency.
Clients receive certification updates and documentation in real time throughout the selection, cutting, and export process—so there are no surprises, no gaps, and no blind trust required.
White glove service from our small team means you will be connected directly to us and we will document every step of your stone's journey as it happens through paperwork, photos and videos and real time updates of where we are in the process.
The result is absolute confidence: not just in the beauty of your stone, but in its provenance, integrity, and value.
